Washington programs that pay family caregivers
Washington pays family members through 3 Medicaid programs. Each has its own rules for who qualifies, who can be paid and what it pays.
Who do you care for?
Community First Choice (CFC)
Community First Choice is Washington's main Apple Health (Medicaid) program for in-home personal care for people who need a nursing-home level of care. DSHS assesses how many hours of help the person needs, and a family member can be hired as an Individual Provider to do that care. The family caregiver is employed and paid by Consumer Direct Care Network Washington (CDWA), not by the family.
$22.52–$27.28/hr
How it works →Medicaid Personal Care (MPC)
Medicaid Personal Care is Washington's Apple Health program for people who need regular help with daily tasks but do not need a nursing-home level of care. DSHS sets the hours with a CARE assessment, and a family member can be paid as the Individual Provider through CDWA.
$22.52–$27.28/hr
How it works →Individual Provider (IP) through Consumer Direct Care Network Washington (CDWA)
An Individual Provider is a caregiver hired directly for one Apple Health client instead of coming from an agency. Since 2021 every Individual Provider in Washington is employed by Consumer Direct Care Network Washington (CDWA), the state's Consumer Directed Employer. This is how family members get paid under CFC, MPC and the COPES waiver.
$22.52–$27.28/hr

States that border Washington
Each state writes its own rules, and they differ more than people expect — a spouse who can be paid on one side of the line often cannot be on the other.
