Michigan programs that pay family caregivers
Michigan pays family members through 2 Medicaid programs. Each has its own rules for who qualifies, who can be paid and what it pays.
Who do you care for?
Home Help Program
Michigan's Home Help Program is a Medicaid personal care benefit run by county MDHHS adult services workers. The client chooses and directs their own caregiver, and an individual caregiver who enrolls in CHAMPS and passes a criminal history screen is paid by MDHHS. Adult children, siblings and other relatives 18 or older can be paid, but a spouse or the parent of a minor child cannot.
$17.13/hr (individual caregiver, from 1/1/2026)
How it works →MI Choice Waiver Program
MI Choice is Michigan's Medicaid waiver for adults who meet nursing facility level of care but want to live at home. Regional waiver agencies assess people, coordinate care, and pay for services such as Community Living Supports (in-home personal care). Through the Self-Determination option the participant can hire their own workers, including relatives, with a fiscal intermediary handling payroll.
